Ashtayaam Darshan: SHAYAN

   Posted by: Tejash Shah Tags: , , , ,

The final darshana of the day commences only after rasoiya boli, when the priest ascends the terrace of the haveli and calls out to the cook to come early the following day. After this, drumming heralds the darwshana. Since it is time for the Lord to retire, various eatables are offered to Shrinathji. A singer praises the Lord in his kiratana, which may take the form of a lullaby. Aquarter of an hour later, the vina is played and Shrinathji is offered a flute. The arati is performed in a mood expressive of a beloved’s emotion and is offered to both Shrinathji and Svaminiji. Bidis of paan, betal leaves with spices, are again offered to Him.

As Shrinathji is about to retire for the night, various arrangements have to be made: His bedchameber is readied for Him, with a container of food, a pitcher of drinking water and bidis of paan. It is supposed that Shri Radha will join Him during the night and her garments and jewels too are kept in readiness.

A carpet spread on the ground leads from the inage of Shrinathji to His bedchamber. It is presumed that He will walk on it in His spiritual, subtle form. The wooden platforms placed in the Doltibari for devotees to stand on during darshanas, are removed. This ensures that Shrinathji does not encounter any obstacles at night, should he decide to visit Vraja. The canopies stretched over the open courtyards to protect people from the scorching afternoon sun are also removed so that the cool breeze of athe night nay reach Shrinthji unhindered. The doors of Singh pole are left open so that He can go to Vraja to enjoy His lilas with His beloved gopis, if He desires.

This darshana is usually not held for the six months, from chaitra Shukla 1to Ashvin Shukla 9, when Shen Shrinathji is supposed to visit Vraja and reveal Himself to the vrajavasis, residents of Vraja.

The chief singer of this darshana is Krishnadas.

Sandhya arati is the evening darshana, and takes place at dusk, when Krishna used to bring his cows home from the fields. The predominant mood is matrujbhava, motherly love. The arati removes the fear of any ill effects resulting from His wanderings in the woods and protects Him from harm.

After the day’s exertions, His garments now are light. He is offered His flute so that He can enchant His devotees and His cowherd friends.

To signal the end of the day, the Sudarshana Chakra on the roof of the haveli is offered consecrated food, and the seven dhvajas, flags, are wrapped round their sticks until the next day.

Chhitasvami is considered the chief musician for this darshana.

Ashtayaam Darshan: BHOG

The sixth darshana of athe day takes place an hour after utthapana. A light meal is served to Shrinathji. A chhadidara stands guard formally dressed in a pagha, turban, a pataka, sash, and a gheradar jama, a garment with a flaring skirt. He holds a staff and wears a golden kada, anklet. The chhadidara’s function is to inform Svaminiji of Shrinathji’s arrival, so that she can obtain His darshana and arrange to milk the cows. Shrinathji is fanned and a morchhala is waved beside Him to remove the possible effects of the evil eye cast while He has been in full view of many people. The main singer for this period is Chaturbhujadas.

Om Jay Jagadeesh Aarti

Posted by: Tejash Shah Tags: , , ,

n the Hindu household, dusk and dawn, hold a special significance as far as prayer is concerned, as it is during this transition (From dawn to morning, and dusk to evening) that negativity needs to be burnt and righteousness welcomed.

Traditionally the ‘Aarti’ is performed during the morning and evening in a Hindu household.

The Aarti consists of a small flame which burns on a wick, placed on a plate, which is rotated round the Deity.

The Ritual of the Aarti makes the light of the flame dispel darkness, the incense that is burnt gives out fragrance, a bell is rung, hands are clapped while one sings the Aarti. If you ask a Feng-Shui expert, he will confirm that all the above is very good to ward of an evil eye!

The ‘Aarti’ reminds us of the greatness of the Lord, because the flame that we rotate is symbolic of the Cosmos (Sun, Moon, Stars) revolving around the Almighty paying obeisance to Him.

Om Jaya Jagadeesha harey Swaami Jaya Jagadeesha harey
Bhakta janon key sankata, daas jano key sankata,
Kshana mein door Karey -
Om Jaya Jagadeesha harey ..

Salutation to Thee, O Lord of the universe,
Thou, who, in an instant, removest the sorrows and problems, of those who love Thee!
Salutations unto Thee!

Jo Dhyaavey Phala Paavey Dukha Vinasey Mana kaa
Sukha Sampati Ghara Aavey, Kashta Mitey Tana kaa – Om Jaya Jagadeesha harey…

Thou rewardest Thy devotees, who singest Thy praise, by removing their mental afflictions.
Joy, prosperity and health enter the homes of those who pray to Thee!

Maat Pitaa Tum Merey Sharana Gahoon kiski
Tum Bin Aur na Doojaa Aash karoon Jiski – Om Jaya…

Thou art my Mother and Father, whose refuge I seek,
There is no one else beside Thee, who I could really count on!

Tuma Purana Paramaatmaa Tuma Antaryaami
Par-Brahma Parameshvara Tuma Sabake Swami – Om
 Jay…

Thou art Complete and Perfect! There is nothing hidden from Thee!
Thou art Perfect, Eternal, Absolute. The Lord of all Creation!

Tuma Karunaa Ke Saagar Tuma Paalana Kartaa Mai moorakh khal-kaami
Mai Sevaka Tum Swami Kripaa Karo Bharataa – Om Jay…..

Thou art an Ocean of Compassion, Thou art the Protector of all,
I am ignorant, O Lord! I am but your Servant, while Thou art my Master!
Do Have Mercy on me!

Tum Ho Ek Agochara Sabkey Praanapati
Kisa Vidhi Miloon Dayaamaya Tuma ko main kumati – Om
 Jay……

Thou art the One. The Real Essence. The Life of all lives.
How do we unite?
I, who am so ignorant, and Thou who art All Merciful?

Deena Bandhu Dukha Harataa Thaakur Tum merey Swaami Rakshaka tum Mere
Apney haath uthaao, apney charan lagaao, Dwaar para main terey, Om Jay……

Thou, art the Succour of the oppressed, and the Remover of pain and sorrow.
Thou art my Protecting Force!
I beseech Thee to Raise Thy hand, so that I surrender to Thee!

Vishaya Vikaar Mitaao Paap Haro Devaa
Shraddhaa Bhakti Badhaao Santan Ki Sevaa – Om
 Jay…..

Help me to get rid of my imperfections and vices,
Bless me with increasing faith, and spirit of service to the devout!

Tan Man sab tera, sab kuchh hai tera,
Tera tujhko arpan, kyaa laagey mera. Om
 Jay……

All that I possess belongs to Thee,
I offer Thee what in reality is Thine, As nothing is truly mine!

During the afternoon, around 3.30 p. m., Shrinathji is aroused from His nap. A conch is blown, for it is time for Him to return home with His cows. The vina is played followed by kirtana. Surdas, the celebrated blind devotee, mystic and poet, is supposed to be the chief singer of this darshana.
